Résumé : The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has established itself as an alternative computational fluid dynamics solver since its creation in the late 80’s. Historically, this numerical scheme was derived from the FHP (Frisch, Hasslacher and Pommeau) cellular automaton. In 2006, it was shown that following a rigorous procedure for the discretization of the continuous Boltzmann equation, one recovered the empirically derived LBM scheme. This important result gave a more solid theoretical basis to the method and allowed many more rigorous derivations of numerical models. In this talk I will present the foundations of the development of the numerical scheme, as well as recent theoretical and numerical advances in large Eddy simulation (LES) techniques using the LBM. Then I will also discuss the modeling of turbulent boundary layers and their coupling with LES. Finally I will show some other recent applications which will be selected among blood flow modeling and noise source identification.
