Bursting ground metal drops
Orateur : Chihiro Inoue / University of Tokyo
Abstract : Ground metal rods and sparklers produce luminous sparks by heat radiation as seen from childhood. It has been known in the last two-century that the sparks of iron containing carbon inside successively burst as melted drops, shown in Fig. 1. However, reasonable scenarios of bursting iron drops were not provided. In the present study, we measure the temperature along a spark with puffing and bursting by the two-color radiometry technique, clarify the heat balance of sparks, and propose a physical and chemical mechanism driving the unique fragmentation event.
