Abstract : Almost 150 years have passed since the first observation of the transition from deflagration to detonation (DDT) by E. Mallard and H. Le Chatelier in 1883. Since then, significant efforts (experimental, theoretical and simulations) have been devoted in attempts to understand the nature and mechanism of DDT. Still there is no generally accepted understanding of the flame acceleration mechanisms and eventually there is no consensus about the mechanism of DDT. A large diversity of the experimental details usually clouds the actual sequence of events and the basic processes leading to the transition to detonation. I shall talk about what are possible combustion modes from a pure theoretical point of view. What are possible mechanisms that can be responsible for the DDT and what is similarity and difference between them. What is role of chemical kinetics and heat losses to the walls in simulations of DDT.
