Nonlinear waves and solitons in 1D periodic acoustic waveguides

Abstract : The subject of this talk is the generation and propagation of nonlinear waves and solitons in1D acoustic periodic waveguides. A central theme of the presented results is the interplay between nonlinearity, losses and dispersion. The structures under consideration are acoustic air-filled waveguides which feature a periodic assembbly of scatterers (resonators, change of cross section side-holes, etc). The analytical results rely on the electroacoustic analogy and the transmission line approach, which in practice allows us to derive discrete lattice models for periodic waveguides. The corresponding long wavelength, continuum approximation of the lattice models, leads to nonlinear, dispersive and dissipative wave equations which are well known to possess soliton solutions. Thus, using the latter one can predict and study the propagation of various types of nonlinear waves in the acoustic waveguide. Numerical simulations and, when possible experimental results, corroborate the analytical predictions.
